This week, UPSIDE Foods and GOOD Meat received full regulatory approval from both the FDA and USDA to sell their cultivated chicken products in the United States, after completing the extensive regulatory process the two agencies jointly oversee.

Both companies will first launch their products through restaurant partners — UPSIDE Foods’ cultivated chicken will be available to customers at Bar Crenn in San Francisco, and GOOD Meat is partnering with Chef José Andrés, who plans to offer the company’s cultivated chicken at one of his restaurants.

“This approval will fundamentally change how meat makes it to our table,” Dr. Uma Valeti, CEO and founder of UPSIDE Foods, said in a press release. “It’s a giant step forward towards a more sustainable future — one that preserves choice and life.”

“This announcement that we’re now able to produce and sell cultivated meat in the United States is a major moment for our company, the industry, and the food system,” Josh Tetrick, co-founder and CEO of GOOD Meat and Eat Just, said in the company’s announcement. “We appreciate the rigor and thoughtfulness that both the FDA and USDA have applied during this historic two-agency regulatory process.”
