An English chilled-food maker has bought B. Robert’s Foods in Charlotte as a part of a strategy to grow its U.S. footprint.

Bakkavor Group purchased the 240-employee Charlotte company for an undisclosed sum and will bring it into the U.K.-based business.

The 97,000-square-foot operation is at 2700 Westinghouse Blvd.

“The acquisition reinforces our commitment to seek growth opportunities within the U.S. market and complements our existing operations in California and Pennsylvania,” Agust Gudmundsson, CEO of Bakkavor Group, says in a news release announcing the deal.

“We are excited to be working with the team in Charlotte on the next stage of the development of our business.”

Bakkavor bought B. Robert’s from Sandy Berlin, Peter Dow and Robert Shore. Dow will continue as general manager of the Charlotte facility. Berlin and Shore will assist with the transition to the new owners but then leave the company.

John Gorman has been named president and CEO of Bakkavor USA. “I am delighted that we have found a business that shares our passion for quality and innovation,” he says.

B. Robert’s has supplied convenience foods to U.S. retailers for more than 20 years. It also supplies ready-to-eat meals for supermarket chains such as Harris Teeter.
