Mettler Toledo Product Inspection Group has expanded its X6 Series with the launch of the X56 DXD+, a dual-energy photon-counting X-ray inspection system featuring artificial intelligence capabilities.

Designed for packaged food applications, the system can detect low-density or overlapping textures. Potential applications include pet food, bag of crisps, potatoes, multipacks and larger cartons.

The X56 DXD+ uses the company’s DXD+ detector technology and Advanced Material Discrimination Pro software. Its AI capabilities are designed to support inspection in complex scenarios, including overlapping or mixed products, while reducing unnecessary product rejections.

The system can inspect medium- to large-sized products on a single lane or smaller packs across multiple lanes. It has a width of 500mm can process up to 500 products per minute.

Alongside contaminant detection, the machine offers quality-control functions including completeness checks, clip detection and the identification of products trapped in seals. It also features tool-free belt removal and a hygienic design intended to simplify cleaning in high-volume production environments.

Inspection images are stored in a database for traceability and can be accessed through the system’s interface or connected to Mettler Toledo’s ProdX data management software. ProdX enables centralised monitoring, reporting and record-keeping across production lines.

Chris Plant, head of market management at Mettler Toledo, said: “The launch of the X56 DXD+ expands our X6 Series, offering a comprehensive suite of inspection solutions tailored to modern food manufacturing”.

“With its dual energy photon-counting capabilities, the X56 DXD+ delivers new levels of detection performance in complex packages across single and multi-lane formats. This advanced inspection capability will further help customers inspect every product with confidence, protect productivity, brand reputations and profits, plus comply easily with industry requirements.”

The system joins the X16, developed for high-speed inspection of individual packages, and the customisable X36.2, which is aimed at high-throughput and multi-lane applications.
