US Foods has agreed to acquire broadline distributors The Thompson Co., Braunger Foods and Variety Foods, all owned and operated by TOBA Inc. Terms of the transaction, which is expected to close by late July, were not disclosed.

TOBA Inc. acquired The Thompson Co., based in Grand Island, Neb., in 1995, signaling the company’s foray into food distribution. In 2002, TOBA acquired Sioux City, Iowa-based Braunger Foods and purchased Sioux Falls, S.D.-based Variety Foods in 2007. With more than $130 million in combined annual sales, the three companies serve independent restaurant, school, grocery and convenience store customers in seven states across the Midwest.

US Foods will continue to operate all three locations, the company said, and it plans to welcome the combined employee base of approximately 250 to US Foods.

“This acquisition allows us to expand further into the Midwest and positions us even closer to our customers,” said Russell Scott, Midwest president for US Foods. “We look forward to building on the expertise of the strong employee base at The Thompson Co., Braunger Foods and Variety Foods and welcoming them to US Foods.”
