Food production giant 2 Sisters could cease production as its Smethwick poultry processing site with hundreds of jobs potentially at risk.

A statement from the company said the facility on Alpha Business Park is “ageing” and has “significant challenges” to meet the standards required.

2 Sisters will offer affected employees up to 200 roles at plants elsewhere in the West Midlands and will also seek to deploy staff across the wider group.

The statement added: “We are committed to our operations in the West Midlands and will work hard to ensure all possible options for colleagues are fully explored before any final decisions are made.”

The news comes days after it was revealed that turkey processor Bernard Matthews, which was acquired by the founder and owner of 2 Sisters last year, is to axe more than 100 jobs at its Norfolk headquarters.
