Thirty-six suffer food poisoning after drinking sherbet celebrating Ganeshotsav

A total of 36 members of Omkar Sai Seva Samiti started vomiting after consuming the sherbet and were rushed to the hospital.

THIRTY-SIX people suffered from food poisoning after consuming “contaminated cold drinks” while celebrating the last day of Ganeshotsav in Meghwadi, Sunday night. DCP Mohan Dahikar, Mumbai police spokesperson, said that on the occasion of Ganpati immersion, one Omkar Sai Seva Samiti in Jogeshwari (East) arranged for sherbet for devotees near Indria Nagar in Meghwadi. A total of 36 members of Omkar Sai Seva Samiti started vomiting after consuming the sherbet and were rushed to the hospital. The Jogeshwari-based Trauma Care Hospital started admitting patients from 10.30 pm Sunday night. According to medical superintendent, Dr Shashikant Wadekar, of the 36 patients admitted since Sunday, currently 20 are lodged in the general ward.

“The admitted patients suffered from nausea and vomiting. Not everyone required antibiotics. We treated them symptomatically and everyone is stable,” Wadekar said. The gastric samples from the victim’s stomach have now been extracted by doctors for forensic tests at Kalina Forensic Science Laboratory. An officer at the police station said they were probing if there was negligence on the part of anyone and an FIR had not been registered.Of those admitted at the hospital, seven are children who reportedly vomited as a result of food poisoning. Of the 13 adults currently recuperating, eight are women.
