After reports last week that hundreds of jobs are at risk at the 2 Sisters Llangefni chicken processing factory, Unite Union said “their worst fears have been confirmed”.

Unite told the North Wales’ Daily Post, after a consultation with 2 Sisters took place on Monday (February 23), that the production lines at the Anglesey facility would be reduced from two to one.

Paddy McNaught, Unite regional manager said: “2 Sisters are looking to reduce the number of birds processed from 420,000 a week down to 275,000, which would mean the loss of around 116 permanent positions with the rest being agency staff. We will be holding continual discussions with 2 Sisters to try and reduce the job losses and to perhaps find other ways around this situation which would be a huge blow to the economy.”

A 2 Sisters spokesperson said: “It is paramount that we simplify our business to ensure that we have the right products and processes within our factories to ensure we can sustain the high levels of quality and service our customers expect.

“Therefore, we propose to move to a single-shift operation in Llangefni as we reduce site throughput. This means some roles will be at risk of redundancy. This will help us to ensure Llangefni becomes a centre of excellence for producing chicken meat to supply the foodservice industry.”

The issue will be debated in the Welsh Assembly this week, said Ynys Môn [Anglesey] Assembly Member Rhun ap Iorwerth.
