Bobst has launched an updated folder-gluer machine for corrugated board converting. The Masterfold now includes up-to-date technologies that ensure greater safety, simplified operations, and production efficiency.

“We have completely modernized the Masterfold 170, 230, and 300 to create a new machine which sets a benchmark for corrugated board folder-gluers,” says Sasha Bourgeois, RD&E director of the Bobst folder-gluer line.

Updates include new digitalization and connectivity capabilities to “streamline” the set-up process and offer “maximum” operator-friendliness. The Masterfold is now connected to the Bobst Connect data platform, meaning that converters can use data to make certain product choices.

The solution can be set up remotely from the back office with a download of the machine’s job parameters. According to Bobst, automatic setup functions, such as the positioning of the main transport equipment, the calibrating shaft, and the speed variator of the folding section, can contribute to faster changeover times.

“The machine setup time in general has been reduced by up to 20 minutes. Automated positioning of the transfer and delivery section alone adds up to 15 minutes of productive uptime for repeat jobs,” continues Bourgeois.

Bobst adds that data can be configured in advance, aiming to reduce operator workloads and minimize the risk of human error.

Expanding digitalization
Digitalization and automation in the packaging industry are increasing as companies aim to reduce costs and improve efficiency.

Pierre Binggeli, head of folder-gluer lines, peripherals, and robotics at Bobst, adds that “a new generation of operators expect modern equipment, while converters are confronted with inexperienced staff and customer requirements such as short deadlines and job runs.”

Therefore, “digitalization and automation are an important part of our commitment to address these needs.”

The EU Machinery Regulation aims to standardize machinery safety and digital compliance across the EU, including AI-powered machinery and cybersecurity. Meanwhile, at the Aicomp Summit in March, efficiency and regulatory compliance emerged as key benefits of the packaging industry’s accelerating digitalization.

Earlier this year, Bobst also updated its Expertfold 145/165 with an automated blank aligner and digital capabilities for job and recipe management workflow.

In recent automation developments, TG-Group and Pick Place have begun a strategic integration to improve TG-Group by bringing together complementary expertise in packaging, robotics, and intelligent automation within one integrated ecosystem.

At Interpack 2026, Packaging Insights spoke to Simon Hill, group product innovation manager at TNA Solutions, about its launch of the tna robag Quantum, a fully automatic packaging system.
