Evonik Industries AG said in a statement Aug. 27 that Claus Rettig, who is currently heading Evonik’s Asian business, is taking over the duties of the company’s CEO Christian Kullmann, who is recovering from a “recent serious, unplanned” surgery.
Rettig has also been appointed to Evonik’s executive board effective Sept. 1 and named deputy chairman by the company’s supervisory board at an extraordinary meeting, Evonik said.
Rettig will continue to assume his responsibility for Asia as a member of Evonik’s executive board, while he will continue as the company’s CEO ad interim until further notice, Evonik added.
Kullmann’s surgery “went well,” according to Bernd Toenjes, chairman of Evonik’s supervisory board. “We are confident that he will resume his duties after his rehabilitation,” Toenjes said.
In 2025, Rettig temporarily headed the company’s finance department until the appointment of Michael Rauch as CFO in May 2026, the company said.
“Evonik is in the midst of the biggest transformation in its history. Together with our colleagues on the executive board, we will consistently pursue the course we have chosen,” said Rettig.

Borouge International has appointed Roland Janssen as CCO, effective 1 October 2026, as the company continues to advance its integration and growth priorities. Janssen will be based at Borouge International’s headquarters in Vienna and succeeds Stefan Doboczky, who is leaving the company to pursue a new opportunity.
Inge Massen-Biemans will become Chief Sustainability Officer (CSO) effective November 1, 2026. Inge will report directly to Dimitri de Vreeze, CEO of dsm-firmenich. She succeeds Katharina Stenholm, who has decided to step down from the role at the end of 2026 to pursue other interests, after developing and executing the company’s sustainability program over the past three years.
The Hamburg site supplies products for the cosmetics and personal care industry and the Bitterfeld site produces chlorosilanes, the company said, adding that these businesses will continue, concentrated mainly at larger German sites.
